It would be a shame not to walk the Derrynane Mass Path if you visit Caherdaniel. This is a moderate walk with lovely vistas which takes 2 to 3 hours. This route is a loop walk and best joined at the car park for Derrynane House where you can park up with ease. You can also start from the first Derrynane Beach carpark if you fancy more beach walking. If you walk along the beach route first you come across a mass rock where people would gather to celebrate mass during the penal times in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

From the end of the Derrynane House car park you can walk through the Derrynane Gardens up as far as the Bell Gate. When you reach the Bell Gate continue to the right (the left leads you to Derrynane Harbour). Walk for about 15 minutes through a tranquil tree lined road until you will see a signpost for the Kerry Way on your left. Follow this walk until you reach the paved road. It will lead you through glorious diverse views down to Bealtra Pier and Bealtra Beach. In penal times, the faithful Catholics from Scariff and Deenish islands landed their curraghs at Bealtra before walking to join the mainland community in prayer at Derrynane Mass rock.

Cross the beach here and continue on your way towards Derrynane Harbour. You might want to stop for a swim at one of the enticing spots on route. The path exits at Derrynane Harbour. Around the corner just up the paved road is Bridies, where you could not go wrong to stop by for a tea and toastie or glass of beer. Continuing along past Bridies will lead you to Derrynane beach and a stroll along this brings you back full circle to Derrynane House and the car park.
